Despite the old adage "no good deed goes unpunished," time after time, good people feel compelled to send donations whenever accidents, illnesses, acts of God and other catastrophic events occur, in the hope of providing support for victims and their families. When the recipient is a person with a disability, however, this heartwarming gesture can jeopardize the recipient's eligibility for "means-tested" government benefits, such as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medicaid. While the donor's motive may be right, the method is often wrong. Means-tested programs have strict financial limits for eligibility. SSI and Medicaid have a countable asset limit of only $2000, along with monthly income limits. The income limit is generally low (whether the income is "earned" from wages or is "unearned" income, such as a gift or investment income), and varies according to rules of the particular benefit program.
